Wharnsby: Coaches' Association continues to grow

The NHL Coaches' Association continues to grow and get stronger. They held a dinner in honour of the late Roger Neilson on Wednesday evening and will host a clinic in Ottawa on Thursday to raise money for any coaches in the NHL who remain out of work longer than expected and need financial help.

The NHL coaches also will assemble this week with NHL deputy commissioner Bill Daly and his director of hockey operations sidekick Colin Campbell to hash out any rule suggestions or concerns with the game today. They also will listen to advice from financial planners and share advice on their rights, like moving expenses, when they are hired and fired.

  1. D M from Canada writes: This is really long overdue. I just saw a couple of former NHL-coaches at the local soup kitchen discussing the draft - the one coming through the window.

But seriously- do sports writers spend so much time in the professional sporting world, that they have lost contact with reality? What do these coaches make? Must be 6 figures at least. They all sign at least a couple year contracts to start with, don't they? When fired, they still collect their money for the remainder. And if they are "unemployed" at the NHL-level, they can always coach at a lower level and still get paid, can't they? Or go on TV wearing horrible clothes and get paid more.

How about, instead of collecting money, they hand out business cards for the local friendly neighbourhood financial planner when the others sign their first contract? Should fix the problem..

Don't get me wrong - I don't begrudge them the salaries they make, but don't expect us to cry when they're out of work..
