Jim Murray from Saint Paul, United States writes: Besides the Hero City memorial, there is another in Minsk honoring the 479 Belarussian soldiers who were killed in Afghanistan fighting for the Soviets. I was there in May. The names of the soldiers are inscribed on walls inside small, candle-lit chapel-like rooms with many pictured. Outside are statures of women, their mothers, equally honored. I thought honoring the mothers a wonderful gesture.
On a tour of the city, the guide, a man, pointed out the headquarters of the KGB and told us it was the highest building in Minsk because from the top floor you could see Siberia.- Posted 04/07/08 at 10:30 AM EST | Alert an Editor | Link to Comment
