William Doyle from Prince George, Canada writes: A note to Poland : Do not accept these missiles from bush as then you are a banana republic once again. The only difference this time is that instead of the Russians calling all the shots you will have little ignorant George bush doing it. Be friends with all parties but do not get into bed with anyone as the price would be very high as you well know from your last alliance with the USSR.

Seriously, this is so utterly ridiculous that I can't believe they have the gall to even try this sales pitch.- Posted 04/07/08 at 4:52 PM EST | Alert an Editor | Link to Comment

John Walker from Houston, United States writes: Hurry for Poland!
Polish loyalty in WWII was rewarded with the Potsdam agreement which enslaved the Poles to Russian socialist internationalism.
Germany, the enemy common to Poland and the USA was greatly financially rewarded with the Marshall Plan. To this day Poland has NOT recovered all of its losses from Germany, Russia and the USA.
Polands greatest weakness is that she has to learn to complain better and to work on USA, German and Russian guilt if only to keep the issues from being forgotten and ignored.
As to the missle shield, yes it would be expensive for the US but so would a missle attack that wasn't intercepted.
Poland's demand for military power is reasonable return for the security risk she would be taking as the USA's loyal and tested ally in Central Europe. Lacking that security shield the Poles are justified in refusing.
How do you say in Polish, 'Without self defense, we don't need no stinkin' missiles shield, place them in England.'- Posted 04/07/08 at 5:54 PM EST | Alert an Editor | Link to Comment

Festina Lente from United States writes: I believe most of the posters ran aground by not followng the thrust of the article. In essence the Poles want more in modernizing their armed forces. That's it! Still in bargaining mode!
In reading history I fail to see where and how the USA owes the Poles for any WW2 reparations. The Poles make no mention of that!
Poland was never ever a BANANA REPUBLIC...not even in the Warsaw Pact.
Polish students take menial jobs just about everywhere but only with the opportunity to pursue higher education in the host countries...resulting in educational levels higher than many Western European countries.
So the Poles want more for concessions...and why not?- Posted 06/07/08 at 10:53 AM EST | Alert an Editor | Link to Comment
