Good.
Now to just get rid of the Sedins and get some Canadians.
Morrison was a dud.
Naslund was a dud.

d nicholls from Kingston, Canada writes: He hasn't been the same since he got decked in Innsbruck during the 2005 WC. What a sharp decline in a team that seemed on the rise 4 years ago. Bernier, Kesler & a reconditioned Wellwood should help, but they're going to need a nasty defence core to keep Luongo sane. With all the front office mismanagement (keeping Cloutier in net for far too long, for e.g.) then the Bourdon tragedy, it appears that God hates Vancouver as much as the Leafs... Going after Sundin for $20 million has all the earmarks of marketing desperation. They should consider the Minn. Wild approach: build a contender via team speed & defence (they've got the goalie) & maybe with some luck get into a conference final every now & then. As the roster stands now, it'll be a miracle if they make the playoffs. It's depressing when Cdn. teams don't get in, even the Leafs.

Duncan McCockenue from Canada writes: Okay... lets be impartial.
Vancouver would need a little JP Dumont; perhaps an Erat... toss in a little Hutton; and maybe a sprinkling of Sarich and Whitney on the points. Younger, faster... some experience on the point with young puckmoving quarterback in Whitney for relatively little cost. Obviously, this would never happen because Vancouver has no one left to trade away except Luongo; but who knows?!- Posted 08/07/08 at 11:54 AM EDT | Alert an Editor | Link to Comment

A disappointment, that post, Scot.
You have keen hockey mind.
Morrison and Naslund did absolutely nothing for two years.

max from edmonton from Canada writes: Vancouver needs to recognize they will not win the Stanley cup before Luongo is past his best before date.
If you are going to retool anyway why not exchange your best asset for a core of young players to build around?
Admit you are in a "do over" phase and get on with it. You might be thankfull you did in 3-4 years instead of burning Lou out to always finish in about 6-10th spot.- Posted 08/07/08 at 1:32 PM EDT | Alert an Editor | Link to Comment

Andre Sobolewski from Canada writes: In truth, there is a decent crop of youngsters waiting in the wings for the Canucks. With last year's string of injuries, we got the chance to see Alex Edler and Mason Raymond play regularly and show a lot of promise. Ryan Kesler and Alex Burrows also showed great stuff. They're the ones who will rebuild the franchise (as long as we can find 1-2 decent goal scorers).
The only trouble with this scenario is that Vancouver is lacking the guiding hand of a veteran, having lost Trevor Linden (Naslund and Morrison were NOT filling that role adequately). That's where Matt Sundin could be most beneficial, though we've tried that with Marc Messier, and it was marginally successful.
Either way, no Stanley Cup in sight for a while...- Posted 08/07/08 at 1:32 PM EDT | Alert an Editor | Link to Comment

tim smith from Canada writes: Th Sedin's are under contract for one more year at 3.5 million, it would be absolute madness to trade them unless the deal is really, really sweet.
I have liked Gillis's moves so far but I think we've been stalled by Sundin a bit here, we can't pull the trigger on Morrison when we don't know what Mats is doing. Maybe I'm wrong.
You have to appreciate Gillis tackling the issue of the second line. Personally, I think the Sedin's (with another useful forward) is a good first line IF we have a dangerous second line that can score. We have a crap-load of cap space and Gillis swears there are irons in the fire, if he's right this could be a very successful rebuilding/tune-up. I don't think they want to blow the team up and start from scratch because we have Luongo for two more years and he ain't gonna re-sign to a team that keeps missing the playoffs.
Good luck Mo! The guy was not terribly popular in Vancouver (never quite reached the potential we thought he had) but he was consistent and classy, for 2.75 million I would have been really tempted to bring him back (look at the guys making 3,4,5 million out east!)- Posted 08/07/08 at 1:38 PM EDT | Alert an Editor | Link to Comment

Scot Loucks from Pickering, Canada writes: Michael Sharp... sorry to dissappoint but note the question mark.
They have about 20m in cap space and have picked up in order...
Wellwood: A project at best in the bigger tougher western conference.
Hordichuk: A career 13 goals 13 assists and minus 14 in 302 games
Johnson: A career 34 goals 68 assists and minus 82 in 547 games
Bernier: Average half a point a game and a plus player... good pickup.
There isn't a lot left out there as UFA's
Is Luongo practicing to score goals this year too?

John - from BC Interior, Canada writes: The plan I laid out in the spring seems to be quickly coming to fruition, which was to "compete" for the 1st overall draft pick during the next few seasons. As I hoped, Naslund and Morrison are now gone.
Hopefully, Sundin wants nothing to do with Vancouver, because I don't want to see the Canucks shell out $10 million per season for that geezer. We just got rid of one over-priced Swede, so why sign another for almost double the salary of the last one?
As long as Gillis doesn't get desperate and trade off some of the younger assets, all will be well, although trading Bieksa for some scoring touch would be okay by me.- Posted 08/07/08 at 2:04 PM EDT | Alert an Editor | Link to Comment

Pick up players willing to skate and hit, then trap and dump for the season. Score goals (and I dont know who will do this part, but anyway) on power plays, if possible.
Dont wear out Luongo. This season is already over. Play the backups liberally.

Roberto Luongo who, in the Canucks last 8 games, while they were fighting for a playoff spot, allowed 3.97 goals a game, with a .864 Sv % while making 6.5 million dollars, The same same Roberto Luongo who ranked first in salaries amongst NHL goalies last year while ranking 13th in ga avg and 14th in SV%. The same Luongo who has a lifetime NHL W-L record of 197-219-33-24 with a ga avg of 2.60 and will be paid 7.0 million next year and 7.5 million the year after that.
Detroit won the Cup last year with a goalie who was paid .80 million (yes, the decimal point is in the right place) last year and will get 1.7 million next year. They defeated Pittsburgh, whose goalie was paid 1.6 million last year, and will get 5.0 million next year.

I saw 81 of the Canucks 82 games last year (80 of them on TV- which meant having to pay for PPV for about a dozen or so), so the turn on the TV advice is a no go. What I saw was the type of goal tending that is supported by the stats I cited. But you may have something with the "grab a beer" advice. I don't drink.
