U.S. crude stockpiles fall sharply as imports drop, demand soars

NEW YORK — U.S. crude oil stockpiles fell sharply last week on a renewed drop in imports and as U.S. refiners boosted demand while gasoline inventories rose unexpectedly, government data on Wednesday showed. Commercial stockpiles of crude oil in the United States fell 5.9 million barrels to 293.9 million barrels, the Energy Information Administration said in its report for the week ended July 4.
