Giving a 5th rounder for an 8th rounder does not make a whole lot of sense. They should start planning to convert Macabe into a forward. Healy can't grieve about that! Macabe does show some toughness at times, eg., bout with the Giant (Chara) although he was pretty beaten up - another way to get him to leave town.

He has a knack for getting too wound up, taking dumb penalties and putting his team in trouble. For example, he took a terrible penalty in game 3 during the Pens/Rangers series at a time where everything was going the Rangers way. It was the turning point of the game, Malkin scored on the PP and the Rangers were down 3-0 in the series.
I feel bad for Hollweg if he's the leaf's appointee who's going to have to deal with Laraque next season. Let's hope Big George doesn't embarass him too badly in front of his home fans.- Posted 14/07/08 at 10:31 PM EST | Alert an Editor | Link to Comment

It's not very bold to predict that Hollweg is not suddenly going to learn to put the puck in the net at this level, any more than former junior stars like Garth Murray, Corey Locke or Jason Krog will. (Of that bunch, give Locke an outside chance.)
Hollweg will provide some forechecking and grit. He also has a rep for taking dumb penalties. If the Leafs' coaches can rein in some of his bad habits, he might be a useful fourth liner. That's the best you can hope for, IMO.- Posted 15/07/08 at 1:09 AM EST | Alert an Editor | Link to Comment

even when i was a goon-ish defenceman in the MTHL with about as much interest in the opposition's net as i had in accounting principles, i still managed at least 2 golas a year just by 'put'n it on net'.

That doesn't mean Steve is wrong about the fortunes of the business that is the Leafs. Ratings will drop, number of games on CBC will drop, merch sales will drop, ticket revenues will plateau. Maybe you'll see a few empty (albeit sold) seats.
As for what Fletcher is doing: some of it makes perfect sense for a rebuild, i.e. focusing on goal prevention by beefing up the D and bottom-6 forwards and stabilizing the goaltending.
What's not making so much sense is the way he's doing it. IMO these stopgap moves should be done with little or no trading away of picks and prospects. Free agency, waivers, project-for-project trades, deadwood-for-low-picks trades. The idea is to buy some time to rebuild the prospect pool and set up a pipeline of young talent.
Why? Because if you just swap picks for known quantities, you run out of cap space in a hurry and/or you have to put complete scrubs in the bottom end of the lineup. High-quality, inexpensive youngsters are more effective and they help keep internal competition stoked. Most of the time, kids fitting that description are groomed within.
I still think the Leafs will be more competitive than almost everyone says, but apart from not trading away the last couple years' first rounders, I see no signs of pipeline-building. If I were a fan, I'd be concerned...but I wouldn't be out on the ledge yet. The next 10 months will tell the tale.- Posted 15/07/08 at 6:52 PM EST | Alert an Editor | Link to Comment

Scot Loucks from Pickering, Canada writes: Swifty J;
Fletcher has not traded any prospects.... unless you consider Wellwood a prospect in which he gave him away.
Fletcher has traded away picks that he aquired from other teams... Florida for Kilger and Belak... Pittsburgh for Hal Gill..... those picks have been turned into Mayers and Hollweg.
Fletcher has not signed anybody that will still be signed past the age of 32.
They have gotten younger, tougher, faster. But without Sundin they don't look to have any scoring whatsoever.
Now will Antropov get better this year without Sundin? Will Hagman continue his better play? Will Blake bounce back to at least a 30 goal scorer?
Will the new Euro kids be able to compete?
Is McCabe or Kubina going? Both? Kubina could bring a top 6 forward.
Fletcher is building to win next year..... if not..... at least be young and competitive with an upside.
I'm liking what he is doing so far.

Dave The Rave from Ottawa, Canada writes: For those who care, here is the full text of the view from New York of this young man:
HOLLWEG SHIPPED TO LEAFS
By LARRY BROOKS
July 15, 2008 --
The next time Ryan Hollweg commits a bad penalty at the Garden, the Rangers will be the beneficiaries, not the victims.
For Hollweg, the 25-year-old fourth-line winger who displayed a consistently admirable work ethic but an equally alarming lack of discipline, was traded yesterday to the Maple Leafs in exchange for Pittsburgh's fifth-round pick in the 2009 Entry Draft.
Hollweg recorded four points last season (2-2), with both goals coming in the first period of the Jan. 10, 6-2 loss to the Flyers. The crowd cheered him wildly that night.
But no one was cheering on Apr. 29, when he took a dreadful boarding penalty against the Penguins in the second period of Game 3 of the Eastern semis. Hollweg unaccountably slammed Petr Sykora into the boards from behind at 15:56, just 2:45 after the Rangers had come from 3-1 down to tie the game.
Evgeni Malkin scored on the power play to give the Penguins a 4-3 lead in the game they won 5-3 to grab a 3-0 lead in the series they would claim in five.- Posted 16/07/08 at 5:01 AM EST | Alert an Editor | Link to Comment

Swifty J from Mtl, Canada writes: Scot, IMO it doesn't matter how the picks were acquired, once acquired they should be held onto and used, barring an opportunity to land top talent. (And a small correction: the Leafs traded a pick and a prospect for Grabovsky.)
If you want to find late-round treasures, your chances will be much better if you have lots of picks to use. Then there's the argument that developing from within easily trumps this type of trade as a long-term benefit to a team. IMO a club needs to stock its farm teams mainly with its own picks, even knowing full well that only a few will mature into bona fide NHL players.
That's why this minor move, essentially Belak for Hollweg, looks like a stinker from here. Instead of an extra prospect from the next draft, they get one year with a fourth-line grinder with discipline issues. If he busts and gets put on waivers they're left with nothing at all; and if he turns into the player you believe he can be, then he's only a year or two from UFA status, a big payday and cap issues. Best case, he's just an ordinary fourth-liner. That's why I think such moves are unwise, regardless of the team.
But, there is time for Fletcher to stockpile picks. And I really do believe that this will be a surprisingly competitive team. The irony is that if I'm right about that, a lot of Leafs fans will be pretty upset.- Posted 16/07/08 at 12:12 PM EST | Alert an Editor | Link to Comment

the rose from the heart of, Canada writes: So far Fletch has done little to improve this team. I'm the first guy to applaud the move to more toughness, however, as much as JFJ dragged this team to the pit of despair, he was in fact pretty good at finding capable 4th liners (Deveraux and Moore). A lack of grit or size in the top 9 forwards (you know, the guys that are on the ice 80 % of the game) was what allowed other teams to shut down our supposed scorers... Steen, Wellwood, Blake, Antro/Pony and Stajan some nights.
There is still time for him to add some scoring, and if Wilson can bring out the fight in the above mentioned (or Bell and Tlusty), or if some prospects can come through, this team could compete as they are pretty solid in the back end. Like Dylan sang "It's not dark yet, but its getting there".

Put me down as one of those. If these guys finish tenth again, again they get a middling pick and the whole rebuild effort requires another year of ground up overhaul. The whole supposed rationale behind the disgraceful treatment of Mats Sundin will be recognisable for what it is - another captain who won't drink the Kool-Aid unceremoniously shown the door(and make no mistake, despite protestations by Cliffie to the contrary, the Sundin affair was designed by Leaf management to make Mats the bad guy in the eyes of the ticket buying great unwashed. From the beginning MLSEL was told unequivocally by Sundin & his agent that he would not waive his no-trade agreement - it was then THEY who decided to take the case to the court of public opinion, not he).
And of course last but not least... another season wasted with no end in sight.
