Toronto market closes sharply lower

North American stock markets ended the day sharply lower Tuesday, after an apparent afternoon turnaround fizzled out.
The S&P/TSX composite index closed down 383.73 points, or 2.8 per cent, to 13,357.56, while the Dow Jones industrial average ended down 92.65 points, or 0.8 per cent, to 10,962.54. The Toronto market had been down as much as 450 points, while the Dow temporarily traded in positive territory before heading lower for the close.
