Richard Hawrelak from Sarnia, Canada writes: Raspberry with chili? This caught my eye because of an incident with the B.C. Forestry Service circa 1958. I was a member of the Fire Supression Group. We were First Responders to any lightning strike. At about 3 AM, our boss called us that we had a stike in the Flathead and we needed to report to the supply depot at 5 AM. We reported, 1/2 asleep and loaded provisions into the pickup truck. Off we went to put out a strike. We loaded up our packs and trudged off over the worst Sh*t House one would ever find, in a wild and thunderous rain storm. We made our first break around 9 PM, found a dry spot under a fir tree, believe it or not, lightning striking all around us. We opened out food supply and what did we find? Cans of sardines, bread, strawberry jam. That was it. We were famished and ate heartily. To this day, when I am famished, my mind goes back to that incident and I grave sardines, and strawberry jam on toast.
BTW, two days later we arrived at the strike and just as we were about to dig the tree under, the darn thing burned out and we returned home wet, but not hungry.- Posted 16/07/08 at 2:58 PM EDT | Alert an Editor | Link to Comment

Richard Hawrelak from Sarnia, Canada writes: The story above had two defining moments in my life. One was the sardines/strawberry jam aspect. The other was drying our boots. I had a choice spot around our fire and had dried my boots quickly. My buddy, Verne, was not so fortunate. So, I volunteered to wear his boots near the fire to dry them out for him. I was not about to give up my warm point on the roost. Unfortunetly, I fell asleep and awoke to a burning sensation in my feet. The heels of both boots were burned and easliy chipped off. Since Verne could not wear my smaller boots, he had to hobble with two boots without heels in them over that Sht House. Know what a Sht House is in B.C.? It's where you have fallen trees from fires and you can literally go down one side of the mountain and up the other without touching the ground ... if you have a good pair of boots. Verne cursed me every inch of the way for four days. It was the worst four days of his life and he often reminds me that I owe him big time.
