The irony about Leo's decision to send Sam Dalembert home is that Croatia is one of the teams against which having a legit big man would have come in handy. Oh well.
With Dalembert out and Juan Mendez already cut and Jesse Young injured what was a position of depth is now kind of thin.
Joel Anthony and Lee Kendall have played wonderfully at times and there is the argument that knowing that they're going to get all the minutes they can eat will allow them to really play free. The problem is a team as crafty and veteran as Croatia -- think Slovenia with more talent and big guards -- will quickly identify that Canada has no back-ups inside and will try to get the starters into foul trouble early. This will be a major issue for Canada.
Can they win? A serious long shot for sure, but not impossible.
I called Gordon Herbert, the Raptors new assistant coach and a veteran of international basketball, for his take:
"I saw Croatia last year and 90 per cent of their offence was running different actions that ended up with them in a ball screen.
"They rely heavily on draw and kick action and their offensive philosophy is to get the ball to the rim for lay-ups or send it out for uncontested threes. They want to make you rotate and take advantage if you don't rotate properly.
"So a real key for Canada is going to be their screen-and-roll defence."
Can Canada win?
"On paper I think Croatia is the second-best team in the tournament after Greece. That means that they will have the pressure of expectations on them, so that should help Canada. They are going to need to play with a lot of energy -- like it sounds like they did in the second-half against Korea. They need to make the athleticism they have work for them. If they do that it's a one-shot deal and anything can happen."
Also this will be a good chance for Raptors fans to see Croatian guard Roko Ukic who will likely be an absolute nightmare for Canada's guards to handle given his size and quickness and penetrating ability. Herbert is high on Ukic who he coached against in Europe. "He's not afraid of taking big shots. He's very creative getting into the paint and he can make plays when he gets there. I think he has a chance to be a good NBA player."
One thing worth pointing out regarding Ukic -- his shooting percentages are insanely good.
From the Raptors release announcing signing Ukic to a three-year contract yesterday:
"He averaged career highs of 11.5 points, 2.4 rebounds, 2.8 assists and 1.1 steals in 19 Euroleague contests. He shot .545 from the field and .824 from the charity stripe.....
In 34 regular season Italian League outings, Ukić again posted career bests with averages of 11.5 points, 2.6 rebounds, 3.0 assists and 1.7 steals. He shot .599 from the floor and .748 at the foul line"
.545 and .599 says great things about his finishing ability and decision making ability also, both tough things to teach.
And finally a little bone on Nathan Jawai, the Raptors second-round pick by way of Indiana. Herbert has been working out with Jawai the last two days in Las Vegas:
"He's very light on his feet, very explosive and very active. He combines that a power game and it's a very exciting package. He's raw, but he runs the floor well and first impressions are he's a hard worker. He's got great potential."

The Canada Basketball site is still full of Dalembert content including the front and center publicity photo. The organization looks so dumb right now: Imagine losing your best player because the coach takes no responsibility for the poor play of the team and singles out a dedicated pro athlete who wanted to play for this country, as well as the BLATANT roster addition of the coaches son who has no business being on this team. Obviously there is no mention of Dalembert's release because they will have to come out on record to give a bogus reason and defend Rautins. Why is it that historically our best Canadian basketball talent avoids the national team at all costs? Canada Basketball is a terrible organization. These idiots need to be called out, and need to account for their historically poor results.

Duke Smith from Tronna, Canada writes: Cayman, couldn't disagree with you more. I will give you that I don't think Rautins is a great coach, and he doesn't have a lot of experience, but: - Nash is not there b/c he's getting old and is tired of playing for Canada. He's done his time and who can blame him. He was mad that Triano got fired but that wasn't Rautins' fault. - Magloire is not there b/c he's a deadbeat and has never shown any interest in playing for Canada under any coach. - From what I've read, Dalembert is no longer there b/c he refused to eat meals with the rest of the team, was late to team meetings, the first one to leave practice. etc. etc. etc. Basically, he wanted nothing to do with the team off the court (he was travelling with his own 'entourage'), and since he wasn't doing much on the court, why have him at all if he's poisoning the team atmosphere? Apparently it was a 'unanimous' team decision to ask him to leave. How can you blame that on Rautins?? Would you rather have a coach that panders to the big NBAer at the expense of team chemistry?? Again, I'm not convinced that Rautins is a good coach. Maybe he is, maybe not. But you can't blame the absence of NBAers on him. If you don't want to play for your country, then we don't want you playing either. Take a look at Rowan Barrett - that dude is heart and soul. Mid 30's and still giving it his all. That's what we need more of. We can't worry about who's not there. We need to play with who is.

damn you, leo rautins. clearly, this is the height of poor coaching. the 'right' coach would have led this team to certain victory.- Posted 18/07/08 at 7:41 AM EST | Alert an Editor | Link to Comment

Big Cayman from South Toronto, Canada writes: LOL at Duke. Winning is all that matters, your best player is gone, Juan Mendez gets cut but Rautins Jr stays in. Too bad you like to believe BS shovelled to you after the fact, as if team members get to unanimously decide anything, or would have been for getting rid of Dalmbert considering his contributition to the team prior to this tournament. Your double standard of giving Nash a pass while at the same time rugurgitating the same old tired line "if you don't want to play for your country blah blah blah" with regards to Dalembert is pretty dumb. Team chemistry?? Nobody was complaining about it when they were blowing teams away the week before in the warm up games to the tournament. Look at the results, now another embarrasing loss, and you are not sure what to think about Rautins. Dalembert is under no obligation to eat or hang around with the team, so let's not pretend that grown men need to be treated like they are in highschool. When Nash was with the team he was given carte blanche to do as he pleased, as a matter of fact he still can do whatever he likes, if he wanted to play yesterday do you think anyone would have had a problem with that? Not me, how about you? It's also funny that you talk about Rowan B being 35 and giving it his all, that we need more like him but you have somehow reconciled in your mind that Nash is old therefore its ok for him to sit out. Its true that we should be concerned with who's in but with who in but with Rautins as coach who really wants to be there.

IMO most of those who comment on blogs like this don't know what they're talking about, but You are not one of them, even though I might disagree with your take on things from time to time ... do want you to get off track by being exposed to inaccurate information.

Big Cayman from South Toronto, Canada writes: Thank's Khan LOL. Would have responded earlier but I took my lunch time out to help with a demonstration at a city basketball camp. BTW I am not suggesting anything about Nash in the negative, but he rolls like a pro athlete, he has injected his own money for certain extras that the team benefitted from which certainly gives him a different status, and different clout than other team members. You also have to admit that Steve Nash can walk in and out of the program if he chooses to do so. I don't see anything wrong with that. It happens in every sport. If you read the article that I posted the link to and which Grange SUBSEQUENTLY posted as his last blog entry at you will see that Dalembert was not acting like a prima donna. The BS that people are reffering to which is trying to paint Sam in a negative light comes from (surprise surprise) that garbage tabloid The Sun. Rautins is a terrible coach.

Khan dor from Canada writes: Big C, I haven't read the Sun's articles yet ... but that would not surprise me in the least. Different individuals who work with/for that newspaper have long-standing relationships with certain members of the Canadian basketball establishment. That said, knowing what I know ... there is no doubt in mind that Sam Dalembert did the exact things that Leo Rautins said he did and that at no time during their National Team careers did other NBA players like Steve Nash or Todd MacCullach conduct themselves in this manner (despite the fact that other non- NBA players may well have pulled off these types of shenanigans in the past). Regardless, what happened this week in Athens was simply inexcusable by everyone concerned.
