Standing up for Gitmo is not standing up for Canada

In the 2006 election campaign, the Conservative slogan was "Stand Up for Canada." It was effective in many ways. It countered the impression that Stephen Harper was an Alberta-first guy, a firewalling regionalist who wasn't prepared to say he loved this country and who was too enamoured of Republican America. On the East and West coasts, Mr. Harper pledged to defend Canadian territorial waters. In the Arctic, he raised the flag. With his rhetoric, he was pointed.
