Richard Hawrelak from Sarnia, Canada writes: Ban the car in Toronto. Drive your bike. Now, there is a Green Plan that saves fuel, reduces GHG, makes one healthier. Millions do it in China. Why not TO?
I drove my bike to school from Ramsden Park to Jarvis Collegiate in the 50s. I used to hitch a ride on the Street Cars, before the subway tore up the streets. At 6 AM in the morning, I used to pack my duffel bag on my bike and ride to hockey practice at the U of T Arena. Even rode my bile to baseball games at the ball park on Front Street. No problem ... except for bashing in one guys car door on Yonge Street. Hitching a ride on the Street car was a bit risky, but fun.- Posted 20/07/08 at 4:32 PM EST | Alert an Editor | Link to Comment

Katherine R from Canada writes: Richard Hawrelak from Sarnia: Thanks for the interesting post - you should think about writing an article or book on the rise and decline (and hopefully rise again) of the bicycle in Toronto. It would be fascinating and would show to a wider audience that it IS possible to use a bicycle for transportation.
I get so tired of inevitably flabby posters whining about their "right" to drive everywhere. Cars have totally destroyed our cities in North America - they take up so much space on the road, the cars Canadians drive are twice as big as they should be, they make it unsafe to cycle, they are causing air pollution problems and asthma....yet because of so many people's sheer laziness and lack of imagination, they do not bother to try biking a few times per week to work. Very frustrating.- Posted 20/07/08 at 9:26 PM EST | Alert an Editor | Link to Comment

H M from Canada writes: Bugger the clothes, that is one CUTE bike! I want to know where I can get one like that! All I ever see are the nasty Canadian Tire/WalMart bikes that last about 2 months and cost $500. I gotta pick up an old bike at a garage sale or something.

Lisa Wong from Vancouver, Canada writes: Yeah, HM, bikes themselves are definitely getting more stylish. Chanel and Gucci recently released branded bikes as part of their athletic accessories lines. While they're outrageously priced (who wants to pay $13k for a bike that's going to get muddy in the rain or, God forbid, stolen?!), they are nonetheless signs of shifting tastes and trends among the general populace.

James Eaton from Nepean, Canada writes: If people can colour and accessorise their cars to their tastes, why not bikes? Anything that gets people out of their cars and onto a bike is a good thing. Plus, colourful accessories are probably safer, as they are more likely to be seen than the dull greys, blacks and blues that companies such as MEC seem to be 'peddling' these days.
