British Columbians are looking to the east, toward Edmonton, in hopes of building the perfect West Coast home.
Wilcor Development Group has teamed with B.C.-based Linwood Custom Homes and Edmonton interior designer Yamina Patone to customize the ultimate West Coast-style home for buyers at its 60-acre Spring Lake Ranch development, 25 minutes west of Edmonton.
"People who are from, or have lived in, B.C. have been attracted to our development since we started," says Sarah Corker, director of marketing and sales for Spring Lake Ranch.
"I often hear people say that Spring Lake Ranch reminds them of the West Coast. That stems in part from our home designs, which have a West Coast look and also feature sustainable options such as solar tubes, rain barrels for gathering grey water, and low-VOC paint and stains."
"But the West Coast feel also comes from the trees, the fresh air, and the way we've contoured the land with varying elevations," she says.
The project's 66 half-acre lots are all at finished grade and contoured for walk-out basements. The lots have been designed to let buyers position their homes to maximize natural light and views over Spring Lake.
Spring Lake, as the name implies, is a spring-fed lake that spans two kilometres. To protect this pristine water source, developer Terry Williams has dedicated land as environmental reserve and set up rock-check dams.
Bordered on all four sides by either environmental or municipal reserve land, the homes at Spring Lake Ranch will have energy-efficient appliances and on-demand tankless hot-water heaters; as well, the project will have restrictions on use of fertilizers and pesticides.
The development offers 18 home designs, from ranch-style bungalows to two-storey family homes. All feature vaulted ceilings, timber posts and beams, and open floor plans.
