Reynolds runs over Ticats

Canadian Press

CALGARY — A few Calgary Stampeders gained higher standing in the club's history books during a 43-16 romp over the visiting Hamilton Tigers-Cats on Thursday.

Joffrey Reynolds ran for three touchdowns for the first time in his career and became the sixth Stampeder to rush for over 5,000 career yards.

Nik Lewis's two 16-yard touchdown catches helped catapult him into eighth all-time in receptions and receiving yards in club history.

Stampeders kicker Sandro DeAngelis was good from 20 and 44 yards to tie for fourth in career field goals with Cyril McFall.

Meanwhile, Calgary quarterback Henry Burris threw for over 300 yards for his third straight game, including two touchdown passes, in front of 31,166 at McMahon Stadium.

He connected on 26 of 33 passes for 345 yards and was intercepted once before backup Dave Dickenson was sent in to get some work in the last eight minutes of the game.

Hamilton quarter back Casey Printers ran in a one-yard touchdown and running back Terry Caulley scored on a 10-yard effort.

Printers went 17-for-26 for 209 yards. He was intercepted twice and has yet to throw a touchdown pass this season. He was replaced by Richie Williams with six minutes left.

CFL leading rusher Jesse Lumsden did not play for Hamilton. The Tiger-Cats left him at home to nurse a sore right knee, and their running game suffered in his absence with only 42 yards in the first half.

Tre Smith, ranked No. 5 in the league in rushing, and the activated Caulley, couldn't compensate for Lumdsen's absence.

Burris smartly distributed the ball as the Stamps racked up 508 yards in total offence to Hamilton's 334.

The Tiger-Cats continued to be slow starters this season and trailed 27-9 at the half. Hamilton has been outscored 30-3 in opening quarters this season.

Caulley scored off Hamilton's opening possession of the second half to pull the Tiger-Cats within 11 points. His 10-yard scoring run followed Printers' 54-yard pass to Prechae Rodriguez at 2:10 of the quarter.

But Burris put together 70-yard and 87-yard drives later in the quarter, with Reynolds scoring from one-yard out on both sequences.

Hamilton didn't get a first down until almost four minutes into the second quarter, but began moving into scoring territory for the first time in the game when they did.

Their momentum was killed by a disastrous fumble by Printers. Dwaine Carpenter recovered the ball and ran it back to the 50-yard line. Printers was sacked twice, fumbled the ball and was intercepted in the first half.

Burris then hooked up with Ken-Yon Rambo on a 34-yard pass and then got the ball to Lewis just before he stepped out the back of the end zone for a TD at 6:33 of the second quarter.

Lewis celebrated by jumping into the stands and received a celebratory paddle on the behind from Stampeders' fans.

Burris linked up with Lewis for a second 16-yard TD reception two minutes before halftime.

Printers finally scored from one yard out at 11:15 of the second quarter and Nick Setta kicked the convert.

Calgary's next game is in Winnipeg on July 24, while the Ticats host the Edmonton Eskimos on July 25.

Notes — Reynolds reached 5,095 career yards as a Stampeder . . . Thursday's game was Hamilton defensive co-ordinator Denny Creehan's first against his former club. The Stamps fired him Oct. 1 . . . A moment of silence was held prior to the game for Lions' president and CEO Bob Ackles, who died of a heart attack July 6 . . . The Stampeders are 6-4 in their last 10 games against Hamilton.
