Kidnappers of British hostages claim one killed himself: report

The Associated Press

LONDON — A British newspaper says a Shia militia claiming to hold five British hostages in Iraq has said one of them committed suicide.

The Sunday Times of London has published what it says is a statement that is contained in a video it received from the militia.

In the video, the group says one of the five hostages killed himself on May 25. The hostage is identified only as Jason.

It isn't immediately clear which of the five hostages the group is referring to.

Five British men were kidnapped from Baghdad in May, 2007 by a suspected Shia group. In December, it released a video purporting to show a hostage who identified himself only as Jason.

The Sunday Times says two of the five hostages are named Jason.

The British government says it cannot say whether the video is authentic.
