Phosphorous, not nitrogen, to blame for algae blooms, study finds
EDMONTON Robert Kristjanson's family has been trolling the waters of Lake Winnipeg since 1891, looking for pickerel and white fish. But 16 years ago, the commercial fisherman first noticed a big blue and green problem: algae blooms.
"People in Alberta, Saskatchewan, all down the line, are responsible for this in one way or another," the 74-year-old said yesterday during a telephone interview, as he fixed fishing nets at his Gimli, Man.
