It was over a lunch in Barbados with fellow Briton Simon Cowell that Andrew Lloyd Webber came up with the idea of using a television audience to help find the ideal Maria for his production of The Sound of Music in London's West End. The reality-show genre had never been used to cast a large-scale musical, so the concept was high risk.
