Forest blaze knocks out phone service

VANCOUVER — As two southeastern B.C. highways reopened yesterday and firefighters worked to extinguish the few remaining hotspots in a 350-hectare blaze, Telus readied a cache of several hundred cellphones to aid residents affected by lost service. The Lakit Mountain fire, located between Fort Steele and Wasa, 20 kilometres northeast of Cranbrook, was first reported Tuesday morning.
