A step too far

Vancouver's smoking regulators have meandered away from sound health policy and into a dangerous grey area by considering extending the city's smoking ban to beaches, ticket lineups and other crowded outdoor venues. Current laws aim to curb smoking in areas where it is difficult for others to avoid smoke, a principle easily applied to restaurants, bars and a few outdoor spots such as patios and bus shelters.
