RALEIGH, N.C. — The Carolina Hurricanes think teenager Drayson Bowman might be ready to play in the NHL.
The Hurriances signed Bowman to a US$2.06-million, three-year contract on Wednesday and will give him a chance to make the team in training camp.
The 19-year-old had 82 points (42-40) in 66 games for the Spokane Chiefs last season before helping them win the WHL Championship. He then had six goals in four games as the Chiefs captured the Memorial Cup.
"Drayson had an outstanding season capped off by a strong performance in helping Spokane win the Memorial Cup," said Hurricanes assistant GM Ron Francis. "He is an excellent goal-scorer with good hockey sense and is capable of competing for a spot on our roster as early as this fall."
He has one year of junior eligibility left if he fails to crack Carolina's roster.
