Millson: Rolen missing the action

Globe and Mail Blog Post

Third baseman Scott Rolen is out of the Blue Jays lineup Monday for the second game in a row.

He is on a two-games-in and a two-games-off rotation right now because of his shoulder but manager Cito Gaston hopes that could eventually become a three-games-in and one-game-off.

Rolen played two of the three games in Arlington, Tex., on the weekend and ended a 0-for-17 drought in the first game with a three-run homer, his seventh of the season and first since June 25. In Saturday's game he had a two-run double to give him five RBIs in the series. He had been off one game in Toronto and then Thursday was an off-day in Toronto's schedule.

“He drove in five runs in two days; it worked out pretty good,” Gaston said before Monday's game against the Oakland Athletics. “I can live with that. I'd certainly like to get it three days on and one off. We'll just see how it goes with his shoulder, He's not in any pain, it's the range of motion. So far so good.”

The Athletics: Entering Monday's game, the Blue Jays were 2-4 against the Athletics, 0-3 at the Rogers Centre and 2-1 in Oakland.

The Blue Jays have lost seven consecutive home games to the Athletics and since 2003 are 7-15 against Oakland at the Rogers Centre.

Before Monday's game, the Athletics' starting pitching was 1-9 with a 6.48 earned-run average in 15 games since the break for the All-Star Game. Despite allowing 60 runs in their past nine games Oakland entered Monday's game with an American League-leading 3.63 ERA.

The minors: Left-hander Ricky Romero made his second start for Triple-A Syracuse on Sunday and allowed one run over six innings in the Chiefs' 2-1 loss. In two Triple-A starts, he is 0-1 with an ERA of 1.80. He was Toronto's first-round pick in the 2005 draft.[amp]nbsp;[amp]nbsp;[amp]nbsp;
