Why Victoria's butterflies are appearing down for the count

VICTORIA — Butterfly admirers from across North America once landed on Vancouver Island to witness the spectacle of layers of butterflies washed up on riverbanks. A century later, there are mere sprinklings of the short-lived insects, and a butterfly specialist pins the collapse on continual habitat destruction and cool, wet spring weather over the past three years.
