HSBC lands Citigroup energy banker

HSBC Securities took advantage of the cutbacks at Citigroup to grab a top oil patch investment banker.

As part of a bear-market hiring blitz in July, HSBC landed Evan Hazell as a managing director in its Calgary office.

Mr. Hazell joined Citigroup last September to anchor coverage of Canadian energy companies. In those bullish days, Citigroup's plan was to back up Mr. Hazell with a larger team.

As the credit crunch took bite after bite out of Citigroup, plans for Calgary grew increasingly modest. Mr. Hazell found he was flying solo in oil patch. So he's moved to a dealer that's got a far larger footprint. Prior to joining Citigroup, Mr. Hazell was at energy-focused advisory firm Harrison Lovegrove and RBC Dominion Securities.

HSBC also hired Matthew Bosrock as deputy chief executive officer, and brought in a new head of dect capital markets by recruiting Jamey Hubbs from TD Securities.

These moves were first reported on the Bill's Buzz blog run by executive search firm Vlaad and Co.
