Delays force Canada to lease helicopters

OTTAWA — The Canadian Forces announced yesterday they will fly leased Russian helicopters and secondhand U.S. ones in Afghanistan as the purchase of a new fleet of Chinooks is delayed by another two years to 2013. The Harper government announced more than two years ago that it was buying 16 new medium- and heavy-lift helicopters from Boeing, but Defence Minister Peter MacKay said the $4.7-billion fleet would not be in use for another five years.
