BLOOMFIELD TOWNSHIP, MICH. "It was okay," Mike Weir said when he finished the PGA Championship Sunday at the Oakland Hills Country Club. "Just okay."
Weir wasn't referring to his final-round 74 or even his tournament, which he finished at 13-over par 293. He was speaking about his performance in this year's majors.
Weir tied for 17th in the Masters, for 18th in the U.S. Open, and tied for 39th in the British Open last month before finishing well down the field this week.
As for the PGA, Weir said "I played decent. I just didn't do what I wanted to do." He meant that he didn't scramble well enough on the treacherous course to save pars. Weir didn't have any chance of winning when he started the last round, 11 strokes behind leader Ben Curtis. He fell much further back when he shot five-over par 40 on the back nine, his first nine.
Then it was a case of too little, too late, as Weir shot one-under par 34 on his last nine holes. He birdied the first, second and sixth holes, while double-bogeying the fifth.
"It's just a tough, tough course. You just keep plugging along," Weir said.
"I could have made six birdies on the front side."
The final round was playing in windy, cool weather, and Weir made a series of mistakes that cost him. He said he'd been making similar mistakes all week.
"I just didn't guess the wind right," he said. "I didn't pick the clubs right or get up and down.
Weir and his family will take a vacation this week. He'll rejoin the PGA Tour Aug. 21-24 at the Barclays in Paramus, N.J., the first event of the FedEx Cup playoffs.
