As global energy resources and Zimbabwe's dollar showed, numbers get harder to comprehend as they grow larger. Everybody routinely expresses oil resources in the billions of barrels – though it's hard to imagine a single billion barrels, let alone the 412 billion barrels (of oil-equivalent energy) that the U.S. Geological Survey says await discovery north of the Arctic Circle. Complicating things further, we have national differences in the way we express the same resource.
