The CFL official who incorrectly claimed to have seen Calgary Stampeders linebacker JoJuan Armour push over an umpire during a game two weeks ago resulting in Armour's ejection will not be involved in any more games this season.
Henry Chiu had been a side judge for veteran head referee Jake Ireland's crew during the first half of this season. But when the makeup of Ireland's crew was announced for tomorrow's game between the Hamilton Tiger-Cats and Winnipeg Blue Bombers, Chiu's name wasn't on it.
One day after Armour was ejected during the first quarter of a 22-21 loss to the Saskatchewan Roughriders on Aug. 2, the league announced the crew had been wrong to eject him for abuse of an official. It also said an unidentified official had been disciplined for providing the wrong information to Ireland.
A source confirmed Chiu was the official disciplined by the league.
CFL director of officiating Tom Higgins, however, would not confirm Chiu was the official at the centre of the Armour incident. But he did say Chiu is one of seven CFL officials who will be designated to the amateur ranks by Labour Day, reducing the league's officiating staff to 35 from 42 for the second half of the season.
"[Chiu] will be going back to the amateur ranks and there's a possibility he'll be used there as a referee," Higgins said. "We're not letting him have the second half of the season, but there are seven people who are not going to have the second part of the season. They know this is the time [those decisions] occur."
