William Nichols is a third-generation oilman and, these days, a devout pessimist. Yes, unemployment is low, and money continues to pour into Alberta's north. But look a little closer, he says. Home prices are sliding (nearly 8 per cent in Calgary during July, according to the latest data). New-home construction has slowed down so much in Alberta's largest city that some of Mr. Nichols' friends in the trades have moved back to Regina and Saskatoon for better-paying work.
