BEIJING — What Canada did Monday at the Olympics (distances in metres unless specified):

ATHLETICS

Men's 200 — Jared Connaughton of New Haven, P.E.I., placed 13th overall in qualifying with a time of 20.60 seconds, and advanced to the semifinals after posting the 14th-best time for the second round (20.45); Bryan Barnett, Edmonton, did not finish his heat after pulling up with a strained left hamstring.

Men's 400 — Tyler Christopher, Chilliwack, B.C., failed to advance after posting the 28th-best time in qualifying (45.67).

Women's triathlon — Carolyn Murray of St. Albert, Alta., finished 29th in two hours four minutes 56.32 seconds; Kathy Tremblay, Montreal, was 31st (2:05:23.49); Lauren Groves, Vancouver, did not finish after breaking her left arm in a crash during the cycling portion.

Women's hammer throw — Sultana Frizell, Perth, Ont., placed 33rd in qualifying with throw of 65.44 metres, did not qualify for final.

CANOE/KAYAK

(Flatwater) Kayak

Men's K-1 1,000: — Adam van Koeverden, Oakville, Ont., earned a berth in the final after winning his qualifying heat (3:29.622).

Men's K-2 1,000 — Steven Jorens, Aurora, Ont., and Ryan Cuthbert, Carleton Place, Ont., placed seventh in their heat (3:29.037) and will race in Wednesday's semi-finals.

Men's K-4 1,000 — Canada (Brady Reardon, Burlington, Ont.; Angus Mortimer and Rhys Hill, both Ottawa; and Chris Pellini, Mississauga, Ont.) placed fifth in their heat (3:06.811) and move on to the semi-finals.

Women's K-4 500 — Canada (Emilie Fournel, Dorval, Que.; Karen Furneaux, Waverley, N.S.; Genevieve Beauchesne-Sevigny, Trois-Rivieres, Que.; and Kristin Ann Gauthier, Ottawa), was fifth in qualifying (1:39.366), advance to semi-finals.

Canoe

Men's C-1 1,000 — Thomas Hall of Pointe-Claire, Que., placed fourth in his heat (4:05.198) and will race in the semi-finals.

Men's C-2 1,000 — Andrew Russell, Dartmouth, N.S., and Gabriel Beauchesne-Sevigny, Trois-Rivieres, Que., qualified for the final after finishing third in their heat (3:43.491).

CYCLING

Women's points race — Gina Grain, North Burnaby, B.C., finished ninth overall with six points.

DIVING

Men's three-metre springboard — Alexandre Despatie of Laval, Que., placed ninth in qualifying with 453.60 points; Reuben Ross, Butte, Sask., was 13th (446.15). Both advance to the next round.

EQUESTRIAN

Team jumping — Canada (Malcolm Cone, King City, Ont.; Gillian Henselwood, Oxford Mills, Ont.; Eric Lamaze, Schomberg, Ont.; and Ian Millar, Perth, Ont.) won the silver medal after losing a jumpoff against the U.S. for the gold.

GYMNASTICS

Women's trampoline — Karen Cockburn, Toronto, won the silver medal with a score of 37.00 — 0.80 out of the gold medal; Rosannagh McLennan of King City, Ont., placed seventh (35.50).

SAILING

Men's 49er (skiff) — Gordon Cook, Toronto, and Ben Remocker, Vancouver, placed 14th overall in the competition with 134 points.

Men's 470 (two-person dinghy) — Stephane Locas, St-Eustache, Que., and Oliver Bone, Montreal, finished 29th overall in the event (205 points).

SOFTBALL

Lauren Bay Regula of Trail, B.C., and Robin Mackin, Newmarket, Ont., each surrendered three runs as Canada (3-4) finished the preliminary round with a 6-0 loss to Japan. They play Australia in Wednesday's semi-final.

SYNCHRONIZED SWIMMING

Duet — Marie-Pier Boudreau Gagnon of Riviere-du-Loup, Que., and Isabelle Rampling, Burlington, Ont., are sixth overall with 47.417 points following the technical routine.

TABLE TENNIS

Women's singles — Mo Zhang, Ottawa, won her opening-round match 3-1 over Paula Medina of Colombia; Zhu Judy Long, also Ottawa, was defeated 3-2 by Fabiola Ramos of Venezuela.

WATER POLO

Kevin Graham scored two goals as Canada (0-5) lost their final preliminary-round game 12-3 to Hungary and will play in the classification bracket.
