BEIJING — What Canada did Wednesday at the Olympics (distances in metres unless specified):

ATHLETICS

Men's 800 — Gary Reed, Kamloops, B.C., placed third in his opening-round heat in one minute 46.01 seconds and qualified for the semi-finals with the 12th-best time; Achraf Tadili, Laval, Que., placed sixth in his race (1:48.87, 47th overall) and did not advance.

Men's 5,000 — Kevin Sullivan, Brantford, Ont., placed 11th in his qualifying heat (14:09.16, 34th overall) and did not advance.

BASEBALL

Stubby Clapp, Windsor, Ont., hit a home run and scored twice as Canada (2-5) ended their tournament with a 6-5 loss to Taiwan.

CANOE/KAYAK

Canoe

Men's C-1 1,000 — Thomas Hall of Pointe-Claire, Que., advanced to the final after winning his semi-final heat in 3:58.820.

Kayak

Men's K-2 1,000 — Steven Jorens, Aurora, Ont., and Ryan Cuthbert of Carleton Place, Ont., failed to advance after placing fifth in the semi-final (3:26.635).

Men's K-4 1,000 — Canada (Rhys Hill and Angus Mortimer, both Ottawa; Chris Pellini, Mississauga, Ont.; and Brady Reardon, Burlington, Ont.) earned a berth in the final after edging Australia by 0.171 seconds (3:02.572) for third place in the semi-final.

Women's K-4 500 — Canada (Emilie Fournel, Dorval, Que.; Karen Furneaux, Waverley, N.S.; Genevieve Beauchesne-Sevigny, Trois-Rivieres, Que.; and Kristin Ann Gauthier, Ottawa) did not qualify for the medal race after placing fourth in the semi-final (1:38.224).

CYCLING

Men's BMX — Scott Erwood, Surrey, B.C., posted a best time of 37.050 seconds to rank 26th after the seedings phase, then failed to advance after finishing eighth in his qualifying heat.

Women's BMX — Samantha Cools of Airdrie, Alta., placed 13th after recording her fastest time of 39.137 seconds in the second of two runs and advances to Thursday's semi-final stage.

DIVING

Women's 10-metre platform — Both Canadians qualified for the final round, with Emilie Heymans of Greenfield Park, Que., scoring 403.85 to place third in qualifying and Marie-Eve Marleau, Laval, Que., 17th (296.50).

SAILING

Men's RS:X (windsurfer) — Zac Plavsic, Vancouver, placed 11th in the final round-robin race and ended up 23rd overall for the competition with 181 points.

Women's RS:X (windsurfer) — Nikola Girke of West Vancouver, B.C., was 18th and 15th in the last two races, finishing with 125 points to place her 17th overall in the event.

SOFTBALL

Megan Timpf, Port Dover, Ont., drew a bases-loaded walk, and Alison Bradley of Pinkerton, Ont., drove in the other runs as Canada finished fourth in the tournament following a 3-2 loss in the semi-finals to Australia.

SYNCHRONIZED SWIMMING

Marie-Pier Boudreau Gagnon, Riviere-du-Loup, Que., and Isabelle Rampling, Burlington, Ont., placed sixth in the final with a score of 95.084.

TAEKWONDO

WOMEN

Women's under 49 kg — Ivett Gonda, Port Moody, B.C., was eliminated after losing her opening-round match to Hanna Zajc of Sweden, 2-1.

WATER POLO

Men — Kevin Graham, Regina, scored four goals as Canada lost 13-11 to Italy and are relegated to Thursday's 11th-place match against China.

WRESTLING

Men's freestyle (under 66 kg) — Haislan Veranes Garcia, Vancouver, lost his round-of-16 match against Mehdi Taghavi of Iran (0-1, 1-1, 2-0), did not advance.

Men's freestyle (under 74 kg) — Matt Gentry, Vancouver, was eliminated following a loss to Emzarios Bentinidis of Greece (0-1, 2-0, 2-0) in the round of 16.
