  1. Daniel Roy from Toronto, Canada writes: I wonder what are his retirement plans?
  2. Jim Labidio from Fonthill, Canada writes: wow, some of you so-called sports outlets are really left at sea when the Olympics are on...top story on your page?! are you kidding?
It's like watching TSN's newcast during the Summer Games...absolutely no idea what they're talking about it coz it's not in the hockey-golf-baseball wheelhouse.
  3. Mike Mike from Canada writes: Good journalism... a 'why' would be nice, btw.
  4. Neil No more last name from Canada writes: Yeah, any ideas why he retired at the ripe old age of 19

poor guy, something's gotta be wrong here
  5. Y NOT from Canada writes: Yawn!!
  6. Chris Michaels from Oakville, Canada writes: What kind of journalism is this!!! What's the actual story. When a 19 year old 'retires', wouldn't one think that there'd be a bit of ink on the why?

Man...at least say 'there isn't a reported reason as to why' or something....man. That's half-assed.
  7. Maxwell Maxwell from Canada writes: The Thrashers once had a 7th round draft pick... and he painted his mother's house one summer. I heard he also farted once when he was up on the latter. I'm just sayin'...
  8. Maxwell Maxwell from Canada writes: Sorry guys, I obviously meant 'ladder', but I got so excited about scooping the Globe and Canadian Press....
  9. Billy Talon from Toronto, Canada writes: Great article...

G & M, Canadian Press, next time, could you leave the article shorter and with less information?

    Thanks.
  10. Patrick P-A from Canada writes: Hmm, I wonder if the kid didn't say why he retired for personal reasons...
Nah... can't be. Must be shoddy reporting.
  11. Simon Dimuantes from Toronto, writes: I agree that this is shoddy reporting...without the 'why,' this story is more frustrating than informative...but don't blame the G&M. This is a Canadian Press story. I guess you could blame the G&M for running it despite its obvious journalistic flaws, but not for actually writing it.
  12. B Viddy from Canada writes: Rumour has it, he will start training as a Trampolinist for the 2012 Olympics in London.

Be afraid, Toga. Be very, very afraid.

    We own the trampoline, baby!
  13. Matt O from Canada writes: Holy impatience, batman! The story just broke, so G & M put it on the front page. Do you expect them to uncover the reason for the retirement in the 10 minutes it takes them to learn about the story and do a quick write-up?

All of you want instantaneous news, then complain about its lack of depth once you get it. Don't you think there's a sports reporter looking into this right now? Well, maybe not, because they're all enjoying their vacations in China...but in general the more in-depth story comes later.

Sad story, anyhow. I'm guessing the problem is upstairs, which really sucks.
  14. a jolie from United States writes: Rumour has it, he has started dating one of the male trampolinists from Toga in an effort to win a medal in 2012 Olympics in London.

If the relationship doesn't work out, he has a backup plan to date one of the Toga weightlifters.
  15. Paul I from Rochester NY, United States writes: He is going to spend more time with his family.
  16. Paul I from Rochester NY, United States writes: Can a 19 year old 'retire'? Can we just call him a slacker who quit? He has turned his back on the Canadian dream. You must expel him before he taints other young minds.
  17. Neil No more last name from Canada writes: Hey Paul I - I'll trade him to one of the Rochester McDonalds in return for you as a back up for my men's league team.

first playoff game is 11:15 pm - thursday night!!!!!!!!!

I gotta be up at 6;45am Friday for work!!!!!!

    wanna take my spot?
  18. M Poland from Calgary, Canada writes: I''l bet it's girlfriend troubles.....
  19. Matt O from Toronto, Ontario, Canada writes: Hey, it's too bad this kid can't handle the pressure of the NHL, but we don't know the whole story...could be depression or some other mental illness that's troubling him.

Better to quit now than to become a coked-up mess like Ryan Leif. Plus I'm sure Columbus will appreciate the fact that they're not wasting money paying an athlete who can't perform properly.

The story did not 'just break', I first heard it on the radio when I was driving to work this morning, 10 hours ago.
  21. Henry Allen from East Bank, Don River, Canada writes:
You don't retire when you're 19. At 19 you resign to change jobs.
  22. Jeff Smyth from Canada writes: I knew this Brett Favre thing would get out of hand.
  23. R. M. from Regina, Canada writes: From the TSN site (There is more to the world than the G&M you know!)

Blue Jackets general manager Scott Howson confirmed the report to the Dispatch but when contacted by the newspaper, Legein's mother said she hadn't heard the news while his father denied the report.

'Until September 20th (when training camp opens), he hasn't quit anything,' Legein's father said.
  24. The Middle Finger ..I.. from Canada writes: To Maxwell Maxwell from Canada who wrote: The Thrashers once had a 7th round draft pick... and he painted his mother's house one summer. I heard he also farted once when he was up on the latter. I'm just sayin'...

Sorry guys, I obviously meant 'ladder', but I got so excited about scooping the Globe and Canadian Press....

    >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

Good you meant 'ladder' and not 'former' when you wrote 'latter'.
'Former' would have meant he farted when he was on top of his mother.
  25. troy rathbone from Canada writes: Have you Forgot about Danton on the St. lou blues,he hired someone to kill his agent, some people have problems.some are created by others.
  26. scribbling mocker from the otherside, Canada writes: Forget Freedom 55.This NHL gig must pay well.
    Where do I sign up?
  27. paddy o'reilly from Canada writes: so while we're on the subject of guys farting on latters or ladders can someone please explain why the whole sportscasting world, including the oh so perfect CBC pronounces Brett Favre name Farv, instead of Favruh. Is this institutional dyslexia or what's the deal Howie?
  28. Rene L from Somewhere, Canada writes: There is something very, very strange going on - how/why do you quit just before signing an NHL contract ( i.e. winning the lottery )? I totally agree that the Canadian Press has the worst articles - hope the Globe doesn't pay top dollar for this type of journalism.

    ===============================================

My mistake...I guess the article did just suck.

By the way, how do you get italics to work in these comments? I think the way you framed my post.
  30. Matt O from Toronto, Ontario, Canada writes: I meant I 'like' the way you framed my post...sorry for the typo.
  31. Danny Manning from Canada writes: Ive dealt with this kid before; he's a likable kid but a little quirky. More importantly, he's a fourth-line prospect at best. It's not hard to imagine him being out of hockey in three years anyway due to being cut. This is NOT a story for the front page of a website. It deserves local coverage, not coverage in a national newspaper/website. On a day with the Olympics going on, the national soccer team playing in its most important game in four years and the Yankees playing the Jays, this is embarrassing.
  32. Scot Loucks from Pickering, Canada writes: Matt O.... suround the quote with underscores for italics.
surround the quote with asterisks for bold.

    Cheers

    Let's try this out. Thanks!
  34. JA M from Our Town, Canada writes: LMAO and wiping tears from eyes ... some of these comments trashing the Globe and Mail over this inane story are cracking me up.
  35. Matt O from Toronto, Ontario, Canada writes: Danny Manning, the sad thing is that if this was a Maple Leaf prospect bowing out, there would be at least 100 comments here.

I've noticed every mention of Sundin generates about as many comments...

I apologize to Mr. Loucks for poking fun at the Leafs, however, after he just helped me out.
  36. j wilson from vancouver, Canada writes: Its a curious story nonetheless.

    Anyway,

    testing, one two

    testing one two

    Thanks, Scot!
  37. j wilson from vancouver, Canada writes: Who is 'player agent' Doug Wood? The defenceman?

Maybe this list needs to be updated. Or the kid needs a certified agent...

  38. Scot Loucks from Pickering, Canada writes: No need to apologize Matt O.... and that thread (Sundin) is still going.... just posted there myself.

And it will only get worse once the (not really hockey fans) who hate all things Toronto.... especially the Leafs.... come back in September.

    Cheers
  39. Scot Loucks from Pickering, Canada writes: You are welcome j wilson....

As an aside... that is the reason you can't post a link that includes underscores... the thread editor will change it to italics and remove the underscores.....

Use tinyurl to post the link instead.

    Cheers

You bet...I have a whole line-up of Finger jokes ready to go. Some might not meet the G & M's standards for comments, though :).

j/k, of course...actually, I've found most Torontonians to be quite self-deprecating when it comes to the Leafs. This is a bit of a strange city, but most people seem to be aware that the hockey team isn't so hot.
  41. Scot Loucks from Pickering, Canada writes: Matt O.... lots of Torontonians who aren't Leaf fans.... lots and lots of Leaf fans exist across this great country though.

Care to wager on whether or not the Leafs discussed the Finger signing with their marketing department prior to offering the contract? :)

    Cheers
  42. Paul I from Rochester NY, United States writes: Niel No More- I wish I could help you out man. I'm travelling on business today and tomorrow and then off to Washington D.C. Thanks for thinking of me. Call my son next time. He is a much better player than I ever dreamed of being. Hopefully we don't burn him out. I wouldn't let him play hockey this summer. Soccer instead. Fresh air, sunshine, and much cheaper kit required.
  43. Al Gonquin from deep south, Canada writes: Why is it that there are so many who criticize the Globe for simply reporting on a news item as "poor' journalism? Do we have to know the cause of death if someone passes on, for example? The fact that the person is dead suffices...if you want more, go to Enquirer or some other rag. I have this suspicion that there is an element of politics involved here - isn't the Globe part of that left wing, eastern Liberal establisment that Neo cons and their ilk love to hate?
  44. Vijay Kumar from Canada writes: But why is he retiring ? I remember, in the world jr. he had a very pesky style of play.

    What a shame.
  45. Neil No more last name from Canada writes: Paul I

No worries mate, Rochester to Mississauga is pretty far to travell

variety of sports is always the best method.

Or, the kid gets burned out (see the Hat story)
  46. Paul I from United States writes: Neil No more- How'd you guys do on Thursday? Burn-out is the first thing I thought about when I read the article headline. My oldest boy burned out on lacrosse with Fall Ball, winter indoor leagues, clinics, and summer camps in addition to the regular season 16 games. I am doing everything I can to help the young goalie avoid the "B" word. Summertime is a "No Hockey Zone" at our house. Now; September-That's an entirely different story!!! I'm gonna run him like a rented mule:)
  47. Rob C from Canada writes: ...or maybe he doesn't want to play in or for Columbus, and he wants to wait long enough to re-enter through the draft next year (probably 2009, maybe 2010)...As I recall, if you aren't signed in two years, you are once again eligible for the entry draft...That may have changed with the new CBA
