Nortel buys audio technology firm

In its latest effort to diversify beyond telecommunications equipment, Nortel Networks Corp. has purchased a software firm whose voice technology aims to bring life-like sounds to virtual worlds on the Web. Nortel said it is paying up to $10-million (U.S.) for Mesa, Ariz.-based DiamondWare Ltd., whose software is used by both the gambling industry and the U.S. military.
