Winni Pig from Canada writes: Regarding glove compartments: Wikipedia notes that in early cars, many without roofs or windows, gloves were considered to be an essential part of the motoring garb, to protect hands from fast moving wind.
Without consoles, or other storage areas in the car, drivers used this one space to store their gloves between excursions.
An online petition currently makes the argument that the name of this compartment be legislatively changed as, plainly, gloves are no longer the primary objects stored therein and, furthermore, should you open the door seeking gloves, there will be none supplied.
We often hear the word "glove box" used interchangeably with "glove compartment". In fact, "glove box" has a technical meaning, describing a unit wherein items may be manipulated at an atmosphere or under conditions different than those outside of the unit, using long gloves built into the sides of the unit.
