Senator's aide charged with sex offences

TORONTO — An aide to Senator Art Eggleton was arrested Monday in Toronto on nine charges, including sexual assault and extortion.

Robert Meinzer, 38, was released on bail Tuesday as police executed a search warrant on his residence in Ottawa.

According to a spokesman for Toronto Police Services, allegations by a Toronto woman led police to lay charges of breaking and entering with intent, assault, forcible confinement, sexual assault, two counts of assault with a weapon, choking, anal intercourse and extortion.

Mr. Meinzer is to appear in court Sept. 14.

Call's to Mr. Meinzer's residence and to the offices of Mr. Eggleton were not returned this afternoon.
