Dickenson sidelined by another concussion

From Thursday's Globe and Mail

Calgary — When Dave Dickenson said he was feeling woozy on Monday afternoon, the Calgary Stampeders feared the worst. Yesterday, those fears were confirmed.

Dickenson, the team's hard-luck quarterback, suffered another concussion on Labour Day and has been placed on the CFL team's nine-game injured list. That means the earliest Dickenson could play again would be in the playoffs, assuming the Stampeders get that far.

"A number of our players have instruments in their helmets that have readings [for impact]," head coach John Hufnagel told reporters. "We looked at Dave's and there was nothing out of the ordinary. We felt the best thing to do was put Dave on the nine-game injured list."

Dickenson, 35, experienced several concussions while playing for the B.C. Lions. He signed with the Stampeders this year as a backup to Henry Burris, who was injured in the first half of Monday's loss to the Edmonton Eskimos.

Dickenson replaced Burris and didn't appear to be seriously hurt, although he was taken out of the game after saying he felt dizzy.

"I've felt that way after some big hits in the past," he said yesterday. "But to have these feelings when there hasn't been a big collision, it's disappointing."

Burris suffered a turf toe injury, but will play in tomorrow night's rematch with the Eskimos. To add to their quarterbacking ranks, the Stampeders signed veteran Ben Sankey, who had two previous stints in Calgary.

Sankey attended training camp in Calgary this year, but was released after spending three weeks on injured reserve. Before that, he had spent three seasons with the Stampeders (2000 to 2002).

Calgary also announced it had signed import running back Lavarus Giles.
