Cronenberg's opera The Fly poised for flight

The Metropolitan Opera seemed to be on to a new thing two years ago when it started beaming live performances into movie houses across North America. But the links between film and opera run deep, and are still powerful enough to lure important film directors into an art form that began four centuries before the birth of cinema. This weekend, three marquee directors have shows opening within a few miles of Hollywood's back lots.
