J R from Halifax, Canada writes: Even as a die hard leaf fan I am getting really sick of these nonsense stories.
Maybe we can hijack the thread if any of the usual suspects are out there to comment today.
Many addittions to the leaf's D this year, and most seem to have a defensive bias to their game. Do they have enough speed though to defend against the skating abilities of the likes of the Habs, Pens, and Sens? If not, are we going to see a simiar parade to the penalty box that hurt us to much last year?- Posted 10/09/08 at 8:56 AM EST | Alert an Editor | Link to Comment

If Coliacoavoaovcaiclo - i can't spell it - stays healthy he would make a mobile and hard hitting D. I'm hoping to see some charging/fighting penalties, rather than the trips and hooks that come with obstruction type penalties and I'm good with that.
Kaberle and Straalman are certainly mobile, but I'm neither has the strength to play the body. And Straalman is still learning. I don't expect either to acrue many penalty minutes.
Finger, Frogen, Van Ryn - question marks.
Frogen played in Sweden - I'll expect he'll need some transition time to adapt to the NHL's physical game, and don't expect a whole lot of PIM's.
Van Ryn and Finger no clue - but Finger was good for 40 pim's in 72 games last year, and Kubina had 116 in the same number of games.
And if you figure Van Ryn is just a younger McCabe, well he should be good for some stupid penalties, too.
Kubina will get his fair share of PIM's 'cause he's really not that fast.
In conclusion - yes - expect trips to the penalty box- Posted 10/09/08 at 1:01 PM EST | Alert an Editor | Link to Comment

I disagree with you entirely - money doesn't mean anything in this. The banning of ownership of people is usually taken as a fundamental aspect of Western society. However, when it comes to hockey players, ignorants like you claim / imply they're spoiled if they want some control in where they work and what they do and not be the property of others.
Ridiculous.- Posted 10/09/08 at 1:28 PM EST | Alert an Editor | Link to Comment

J R from Halifax, Canada writes: Neil No More....that's kind of what I am worried about. I am not sure the stay at home types we picked up have the foot speed to play against some of the speedier teams. Their heart may be in the right place but its your body that need to be in position.
The thing I am banking on is an improved system, more blocked shots, and more help from the forwards....all things I believe Wilson will bring to this team.- Posted 10/09/08 at 1:37 PM EST | Alert an Editor | Link to Comment

tim smith from Canada writes: Not sure what conference he thinks he's in but he might be building up the wrong side of his team. O'Sullivan would be a good trade (but not a great one).

Neil No more last name from Canada writes: Yeah - hoping over all team defence improves, still don't have any horses on D who bring that mix of speed, strength and smarts to play a well rounded D.
Kaberle is missing the strength, Kubina the smarts.
Coliacaifudfaxcfvkjgvo - may have the potential, if he could just stay healthy.
If Straalman goes to whatever school taught Nik Kronwall to hit out in DET, that would be good.
Finger and Frogen who knows. Finger's 41 PIM's in 72 games means little, if he was seeing 12 min. of ice per game. Frogen - ????
Van Ryn is as good as gone to L.A. O'Sullivan is a great trade
(well of course I realize it's speculation)

Daniel Plainview from Canada writes: This O'Sullivan/Van Ryn thing smacks of Nick Kypreos/Bill Waters attention-seeking garbage.
I heard LA offered to do the deal if Fletcher throws in 1st, 2nd and 3rd round picks. Fletcher accepted, and also threw in 4th and 5th rounders, agreed to pay 100% of Van Ryn's salary, and buy him a house in LA.- Posted 10/09/08 at 3:35 PM EST | Alert an Editor | Link to Comment

hey, hey, hey...let's live in reality here.
It was a 1st, 2nd and 4th round pick only; 50% of Van Ryn's salary and a condo, not a house...geez- Posted 10/09/08 at 3:41 PM EST | Alert an Editor | Link to Comment

wayne powers from saskatoon, writes: O Sullivan is an interesting player but I think the price is beyond the Leafs unless you could talk them into taking Blake and Bell. Unforunately LA does not have a GM who would risk his career on Flake and Stripes

Neil No more last name from Canada writes: Flake and Stripes....hmmm.... O'Sullivan would be a good addition for the Leafs, he did play his Junior hockey in Mississauga so he's familiar with the GTA.
But the way LA's GM (name escapes me) is hoarding draft picks and young players, I don't see it happening.
On the other hand, they do need to get to the cap floor, and who better than the Leafs to provide overpaid veterans- Posted 10/09/08 at 4:19 PM EST | Alert an Editor | Link to Comment

Richard Hawrelak from Sarnia, Canada writes: The slave trade is alive and well in the NHL. I was happy to see Van Ryn use the Sarnia Sting (as an overager at that) to beat the NHL Overlords at their own game.
