Stocks jump on talk of AIG rescue

Stocks in the United States closed higher Tuesday, as reports of a rescue package for insurer American International Group Inc. began to circulate on Wall Street. The Dow Jones industrial average closed 141 points higher, or 1.3 per cent, to 11.059, a day after its worst points loss since the terrorist attacks of 2001. The S&P 500 gained 20.90 points, or 1.75 per cent, to close at 1,213.60.
