Politicians champion the ordinary taxpayer

WASHINGTON — Even as they rushed to ready a bailout worth hundreds of billions of dollars to Wall Street, politicians of both stripes were scrambling yesterday to insist their primary interest was the little guy on Main Street. Presidential rivals and congressional bigwigs jockeyed to portray themselves as champions of ordinary taxpayers while tarring their opponents as uncaring dupes of greedy fat cats.
