Retailers gird for weak holiday sales season

Retailers have scaled back inventory and advertising spending as they brace for a tough fall and holiday shopping season, and they will likely look for further cutbacks in a softening economy, industry insiders said.
Some chains may even close underperforming stores and reduce their work forces as they dig in for what some say will be grim months ahead - and one of the weakest holiday periods in years.
