Harper sweater-vest goes up in flames

The Canadian Press

ST. JOHN'S — The frustration of the local arts community in Newfoundland and Labrador erupted into a ball of fire on a beach outside St. John's.

Dozens of people joined actor and comedian Mary Walsh as she hosted a sweater-vest burning to mock Conservative Leader Stephen Harper's policies on Middle Cove Beach on Monday.

Conservative cuts to arts programs across the country have infuriated actors and artists alike.

Walsh says Harper is trying to appear more down to earth and approachable in campaign ads, but his cuts to culture and right wing policies make him anything but.

Walsh says she hopes the sweater-vest burnings take hold across the country.
