Stock market rout resumes

Losses on North American stock markets accelerated at the end of trading Tuesday, as investors digested U.S. Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke's comments warning that the “outlook for economic growth has worsened.”
The Dow Jones industrial average closed 5.11 per cent lower, or 508.39 points, to 9,447.11 after losing 3.6 per cent Monday. The broader S&P 500 hit a five-year low of 996.26, down 5.74 per cent or 60.62 points.
