Weird moments in political leadership

"I encourage you all to go shopping more" - George W. Bush

"I expect some good buying opportunities may be opening up'' - Stephen Harper

Because you see, as an economist, Stephen Harper knows that if you have just lost half your retirement savings, your job is in jeopardy and the value of your house has plummeted, the best thing you can do - really, the smartest thing you can possibly do - is to go sell an organ, a kidney, maybe your liver, then take the proceeds and see if you can get a bargain basement price on some CIBC shares.

"Stephane Dion won't give out stock tips. Leaders tell you to buy stocks in a plummeting market. Stephane Dion hasn't told anyone to sell their TV to buy twenty shares in RIM. Stephane Dion: not a stock pusher. Not a leader."

***

Update: Turns out Stephen Harper isn't the only financial genius trumpeting this once-in-a-lifetime buying opportunity. His kindred soul is actually somebody Harper has long modeled his HR practices after ("You're Fired!").

From Larry King's interview with Donald Trump last week:

King: I know, this is something you're not. So try to put yourself in their shoes, the average American family, average guy. ...

Trump: Well, it's both a very tough time and a great opportunity. There are great opportunities right now for people when you say average family. It's an unbelievable time to buy a house and especially if a bank happens to own it because they've put the money in so it's not a question of getting financing.

  1. Systemic Risk from Canada writes: I think selling organs is not legal under the Canada Health Act.

Seriously though, I kind of agree that playing chicken little isn't exactly what we need from a PM right now. Fact is no world leader was expecting things to get this bad, and no one was prepared. Canada is doing remarkably well and, as i keep asking, how does any government, esp that of Canada, halt a global equities rout?

Beyond maybe extending EI benefits short term and kick starting some infrastructure projects - which wouldn't make much difference, what could the Tories do - some "I feel your pain" - really are we that childish?
  2. The Man Behind The Curtain from United States writes: That "Buy Stock" quote form Harper is going to kill him like the "Let them eat cake" one.
  3. Chris Sigurdson from Canada writes: "It wasn't raining when Noah built the ark."

Oh, we of little faith. As the flood waters of economic turmoil lap at our ankles- Why didn't we see that Stephen, like Noah, had divine instructions- from the mouth of God to Stephen's ear.
By the way- during the Flood referred to in the Bible- as the ark floated away, investment and real estate brokers were saying "Hey, people there are a lot of really good deals out there!"
