OTTAWA — The U.S. vice-presidential debate had hardly ended when the families of Joe Biden and Sarah Palin rushed on stage to embrace the candidates. But when Canada's English-language leaders' debate wrapped up, at roughly the same time, no spouses or children ran onto the set to throw their arms around any of the five federal leaders. Spouses in Canadian politics have traditionally played a muted role.
