Gordon Segal, co-founder of U.S. home furnishings retailer Crate & Barrel Holdings Inc., got an inkling that the bride factor could be great for business soon after he opened his first store in Chicago in 1962. Brides bought the basics for their home, and then often became lifetime customers. But when it came to signing them up for their gift registry, he found department stores had that lucrative field cornered.
