Reactions to the attack on America
I am disgusted that our government is supporting such a vicious attack on such a weak country. This war is immoral and illegal, no matter how you look at it.
M.Selig
I commend the people of the United States for having steadfast faith in President George W. Bush, the army and navy. The God we serve will prevail and when this is over, all will see His power.
Cynthia Dobson
Isn't it interesting, the pacifist appeasers laying the blame of collateral damage at the American doorstep? The pacifist appeasers have always been and will continue to be history's fools. The preservation of freedom and democracy has always required defensive military action, the present crisis being no exception.
D. Lea
It took too long. They should have dropped an atomic bomb on them the next day.
Del Amendola
Thank God Prime Minister Jean Chrétien finally got Canada involved. I am (almost) proud to be a Canadian.
Robert Johnston
It's a no-win situation. If Osama bin Laden dies, he becomes a martyr for all young Islamic extremists to follow. If there had been no retaliation from the United States, it would have been open season on the national landmarks of the Western world. There is absolutely no making the best of this bad situation.
Ian Moores, Canada
I don't think people realize that this is just about two tyrants fighting for the minds of the world. It is the crusades - we are actually going backward in history.
Jon Armstrong
If we don't deal with the problem now, it will be more difficult later - after the extremists, represented by Osama bin Laden, have control of more of the Middle East.
Roy Henriksen
The spilling of the blood of innocent, emaciated and helpless Afghans will turn even moderate Muslims into terrorists and jihadis. Then, all Americans and Englishmen will live to regret this for the rest of their lives.
Ami Shaheed
The U.S. retaliation is just another act of terrorism.
Patrick d'Silva
U.S. President George W. Bush and the rest of the alliance are doing an awesome job. If nothing else good comes of this, at least our leaders and most people of the world seem to making a turn back to God, the one in whom our country was founded.
M. Thomas
Those responsible for the cowardly action against civilians on Sept. 11 should be executed in front of the news media of the world.
A.K. Scott
Bombing should continue until the ground around Kabul and Kandahar become flat like Saskatchewan, after which other cities would take their turn. Once Afghanistan is flat, the ground can be plowed and planted to feed the people. By that time the United States will have identified the next bunch of bastards to be hammered.
Gord Aldridge
The psychology behind the expressions of anti-Americanism is understandable, I suppose. It is irritating, however, that so much of the Yank-bashing is based on outdated stereotypes and caricature.
Brian
I am from India and the kind of lax security I saw at the airport when I arrived in Canada was really surprising. In India, we live with the threat of terrorism most of the time, and despite strict security measures at airports there, incidences of hijacking do occur. But with more sophisticated technology, simple security measures would help track down potential hijackers and illegal immigrants. So it is a welcome move.
S. Chakravorty
Since their 1996 takeover, the Taliban's treatment of women and children has been public information. No health care, no jobs, no education. Refugees fled the country, and struggled to survive with minimal assistance. No one froze Taliban bank accounts then, despite the Afghan casualties. Their war on women was an obvious sign; we should have paid attention and reacted years ago.
Darlene Rude
The harder solution is to focus on the cause rather then a symptom, which is the perception that all the Americans care about is access to oil and their pro-Western, one-sided policies involving countries such as Israel.
Dwayne Newman
Why did the world turn its back on Afghanistan after the war with the Soviets, thus creating an environment in which terrorists could flourish and in which women are treated like dirt? Why did the United Nations not help Afghanistan rebuild its society? Why were its brave citizens thrown to the political machinations of Pakistan, which created the monstrous Taliban?
Gina
I am appalled by the sentiments voiced by many Canadians that the United States should negotiate with terrorists. If Ottawa or Toronto were destroyed, would they say the same thing? I used to be a Canadian, and am very ashamed of some of my former countrymen's opinions.
Sam
Responding to violence with violence is not a solution. Trying to resolve this issue peacefully through negotiations and political means could have more positive long-termeffects, when the countries harbouring terrorists realize the wrong they have been doing.
Evelyn Dortok
What I take exception to is CNN's portrayal of what is occurring in Afghanistan with a kind of "war as sport" coverage. The images of military experts joined by CNN anchors describing the "hits of the day" and strategies for "taking out positions" desensitizes one to the reality of war and the inevitable death and destruction that comes with endless bombing and missile attacks.
Chris Robinson
I find it unbelievable that many Canadians think we should sit on the sidelines and not get involved with the war on terrorism. Canadians should ask themselves if we really believe that we would enjoy the lifestyles we have today were it not for our close relationship with our southern neighbours.
G. Bingham
I believe Osama bin Laden is hiding in a studio somewhere in Kabul that has a background that looks like he is hiding in a cave. The studio would provide recording for the media against the fake backdrop. I wonder if the army has thought of this angle?
John
The terrorists have abused the hospitality and generosity of the countries they have lived in to launch their attacks. They have demonstrated their utter contempt for those counties and the lives of all their civilians.
Johanna Jensen
This is an illegal war, despite the frenzied attempts to whitewash it. However loudly you shriek that it's not illegal, however virulently you abuse those who point out that it is, the truth will out.
Margaret Clare Ford
Why is the United States continuing to bomb Afghanistan even though defence personnel stated a couple of days ago that they were running out of military targets?
Allison
Thank God the United States and Britain have the smarts to take action, or we would all be living in caves. We can write e-mail to any newspaper and TV station - now that is freedom.
A. Rachel
This bombing from high altitudes is insane. It may be just as counterproductive as what the Americans did in Vietnam. They have smart bombs that are precise, so there would be fewer innocent civilians getting killed. Once they take out the anti-aircraft defences with smart bombs, they can use helicopters to finish off the other targets.
