ATTACK ON THE U.S.

Saturday, Feb. 4, 2006

Reactions to the attack on America
Page 2

Although I am not saying the attack on countless innocents in New York and Washington is justified, the U.S. government cannot truthfully be astonished by them. The Americans have repeatedly thrust their steroid-laden arms into conflicts they had very little to do with. By bombing countless targets across the Middle East, placing trade sanctions on a country where now the only one who can still afford to eat is Saddam Hussein himself and deciding they have the authority to be an international SWAT team, they have enraged people to the point that they will dance and laugh in the streets upon hearing of this horrific event.
Brady Murphy

America should learn a lesson from this and quit playing godfather of the world.
Navdeep Singh

Surreal.
R. Sheffield

Thank you for the comments made in your paper about living as Americans. We appreciate your prayers, support and faith.
Carole Wooten

We Americans would like to thank you for your support during our time of need. Your sympathy and condolences have been greatly appreciated.
Heather Beck

I was mortified by this attack; it should not have happened at all. But this now will mean war. As Canadians, we will back up the United States.
L. Richardson

This is the saddest day in history that I have lived to see.
Kari Martinez

What I do not understand is that very well paid, high-ranking officials were unable to advise us this was coming.
Lynda Smiley

I am a Canadian citizen. I was born in Lima, Peru, and I have been through terrorist attacks and I know how the American people are feeling. My heart and prayers go out to the United States of America.
Katia Chavez-Bravo

As a Fire Fighter/EMT and daughter of a U.S. Army officer, I was touched and profoundly moved by Canadian support. I recently visited Canada on vacation and fell in love with the people and the country. Canada's overwhelming support will not go unnoticed.
M. Brooke Walker

I would like your readers to ponder whether the recent tragic events in the United States would have happened if the Palestinian issue had been forced by the world community into settlement years ago. After all, it did so 55 years ago with the establishment of Israel.
H.M. Coumans

I am from a small town in Saskatchewan, and the effect this tragedy has had on our community is tremendous. We are far away from it, but the tremendous loss has us grieving here as well. We are all human - that is what brings us together.
Lori Steele

I am a Canadian who grew up in Montreal, lived in Ottawa and recently moved to Washington, DC. Never have I felt so far away from home.
E.C.

Let's hope Canada does its part and joins the civilized world to fight this menace once and for all. Countries that harbour these terrorists should be punished severely. Don't trade with them, and don't trade with those countries that do trade with them. Some innocent people in these countries will perish. But we need to send a strong message to these nations that we will not tolerate their behaviour any more.
David L. Robert

Tomorrow will be a better day.
Kathy Giles, Fredericton, N.B.

We need evidence, and the world needs justice. Whether or not the attackers are ever found, these people will pay for the pain they have caused, even if it is in hell.
Jose C. Zavala

This tragedy can be seen as a sign to the entire human race to take time to redefine its priorities. We are moving further away from spirituality and brotherhood and are falling prey to the lure of material and superficial matters. It is time to embrace one another with compassion and understanding.
Lori Power

Remember that a human can survive at least 7 days without water, so there is still hope for the missing. Don't give up!
Roseline Desrosiers, New Brunswick

The attackers may have believed that they were serving their God, but they were really pawns of very convincing, manipulative leaders who used them to advance their own selfish wants, and to destroy the people they envy, by using God and religion to meet those ends.
Lidia Mestnik, Toronto

Let's show these terrorists that although they took many lives, we are strong and will all unite to make it right again.
Danielle Whitty, Sudbury, Ont.

I truly hope that U.S. President George W. Bush thinks long and hard about taking the necessary actions to bring these people to justice.
Alanna Carpenter, Ontario

My husband is Canadian and lives here in the United States and I know that he can hold his head high with pride knowing his fellow countrymen have put differences aside and united with us in this fight against terrorism.
S.G. Brown

You can't win their war doing it your way. You should do it their way. Put the time to learn about the whole picture. Identify your targets and, most important, do not broadcast your next plan to the world.
T.W., Toronto

I think Canadians should unconditionally support retaliation against terrorism.
Boyd Sasuman

As a Sikh living in Canada, I totally condemn these cowardly acts of terrorism. I would also like to clear up some confusion regarding the attitude among those who associate turbans with terrorism. First, we Sikhs are not Muslims. We have our own religion, appearance, culture and dignity - not to be associated with fanatic Muslims, who also wear turbans. Second, the Sikh religion does not tolerate any form of violence against any group.
Baljeet Bilkhu

New York seems like a world away from our peaceful little town of Qualicum Beach, B.C., but the pictures and stories I watched on TV that dreadful morning took me right downtown. I swear I could feel the pain and horror as though I were a New Yorker myself.
Norm, Qualicum Beach, B.C.

This is a war we cannot win. Like that other war we cannot win - the war against drugs - nothing short of a fascist infrastructure along the lines of Singapore will even begin to engage the enemy. "Star Wars" defence systems can't stop individuals from walking into large Western cities with bombs, germs or other means of killing people.
Meryl Duprey

I am 17 years old and have never experienced war, but from the study of history I know that nothing good can come of it and that two wrongs will never make a right.
Sarah Kromkamp

I was outraged when I heard that the Palestinians were rejoicing in the streets because our country had been attacked. When their country is attacked, we do not run out into the streets and cheer "God is good!"
Amanda Bryant, Chicago

Bombing those who harbour the suspected perpetrators is not the answer. What good will it do to cause more innocent deaths? After all, isn't that what just happened in the United State son Sept. 11?
Patricia Godin

America helps those who ask for our dollars and soldiers to help. Yet when we are assaulted, who comes to our aid? Tighten our borders; send those workers home who resent the success of our ways. Send them home and don't look back.
Linda Harrington, Sarasota, Fl.

How can we be angry at this act of violence committed against humanity, when many of us are capable of the same thing?
Rose

Never will I believe that an eye for an eye leaves us fully satisfied in the end.
Aaron LaFlora

The New York gets bombed, U.S. President George W. Bush will spend $30-billion to get even … and the Canadian dollar goes down?
David Perozak

If it could happen in New York, what makes us think it could never happen in Toronto?
Taryn Bradford, Woodbridge, Ont.

They say that Canada is to blame for these people getting in to the United States, but is it not the United States Customs to blame for letting them in?
Bev Hanley

On Tuesday, Sept. 11, we saw the face of evil and felt the blows of history's greatest terrorist attack - and we're still standing. The terrorists have united this country in a way that never could have perceived.
Diane Bower, Pennsylvania

How should the United States respond to send a clear signal to others considering terrorist attacks against them? A) A protracted ground war to expunge the leadership, with loss of allied lives; B) A Protracted air war with the intent of destroying the infrastructure as punishment, with the possible loss of aircraft; or C) A nuclear strike against the host country, sending a absolute and clear signal, with the risk of condemnation from some quarters of the world. I vote for C.
Stephen Bridgett

The gates of heaven opened Sept. 11 to accept many new angels.
Richard

I wish the United States has the resolve to move quickly with the inevitable retribution against both the most recent terrorists and all other terrorists as well. Not as a deterrent, but as extermination. You do not deter mosquitoes, you kill as many as you can.
Jiri Zelinka

I think the attacks were directed at U.S. president George W. Bush and his father's bullying tactics.
Laura Lee Harris

These terrorists use the openness, decency and sense of fairness that are the fabric of both nations, and turn it against us. Unfortunately, from this time forward both Canada and the United States have to consider themselves at constant war with such extremists.
E. D. Scott
