Veteran: William Forder Smith

Artifact: Notification of death document.

It reads: Private Smith was on duty at a Lewis gun post which was dug in the side of a bank, during Military operations on September 6th 1918. The enemy had been shelling the area with 4.1 shells for some time but only one shell fell in the vicinity of the post. This solider was hit by fragments from the shell and instantly killed.

Veteran:Lieutenant-Colonel Edward Nelles

Artifact: A memo to the Col.Nelles on his being wounded

It reads: Personal

Dear Colonel Nelles,

I am so very sorry to see by the cables that you have been wounded during the recent fighting on the Canadian front, but I am glad to know that the wound is not serious. I trust you may have a speedy recovery.

The work of the Corps has been magnificent and I am sure that the First Brigade maintained its already splendid record.

Again wishing you a speedy recovery. I am,

Veteran: William McLeish

Artifact: A letter from King George.

The Queen joins me in welcoming you on your release from the miseries and hardships, which you have endured with so much patience and courage.

During these many months of trial, the early rescue of our gallant officers and men from the cruelties of their captivity has been uppermost in our thoughts.

We are thankful that this longed for day has arrived, and that back in the old country you will be able once more to enjoy the happiness of a home and to see good days among those who anxiously look for your return.

Veteran: William McLeish

Artifact: A letter from the Canadian Red Cross Society to Miss N. Watson.

It reads:

Dear Madam,

I am in receipt of your letter re: Pte. McLeish who is now at the following address:

Pte. Mr. McLeish 24446.
13th Royal Highlanders of Canada,
Lager 2, Block 4., K. 29.
(the next two lines are faded)

And we have never as yet received any word from him saying that he has been ill.

His last P.C. to us is dated 23/12/17 which runs as follows:

"I thank you most sincerely for the food packets which arrive every week. I am well pleased with content - contents. The Bread from Berne is also O.K."

Of course, being on a Working Party makes it more difficult for the men to write. I sincerely hope that this information will relieve you somewhat of your anxiety ,and that you will soon receive good news from him.
