It took just hours for Robert Edwards to find a new home in the CFL.

The Toronto Argonauts signed the veteran running back to their practice roster Sunday, the same day Edwards was released by the Montreal Alouettes.

Edwards, 32, was banished to the bench for each of the Alouettes' past three games in favour of emerging rookie Jarrett Payton. Edwards had just 27 carries for 72 yards for Montreal this season.

Edwards led the CFL with 17 touchdowns in 2006 while finishing third in rushing with 1,155 yards. Edwards joined the league in 2005 after spending parts of three seasons in the NFL.

The Argonauts also announced the release of defensive back Jermaine Mays and running back Jamel White.
