Raptors lose out on bringing back Stoudamire

The Toronto Raptors won't be adding Damon Stoudamire to their roster as insurance at the point guard position, but it's looking like they might not need him anyway.

NBA sources indicated last night that Stoudamire, 34, is expected to sign with the San Antonio Spurs for the remainder of the season. The Memphis Grizzlies bought out the guard's contract and waived him this week.

The Raptors were among five NBA teams trying to secure the services of the 12-year veteran, who played the first 2 1/2 years of his career in Toronto before moving on to the Portland Trail Blazers and then Memphis.

But lessening the blow was the suggestion yesterday that Toronto point guard T.J. Ford is edging closer to returning.

Ford has been on a rehabilitation assignment in Houston while recovering from a neck injury suffered Dec. 11. While no timetable has been set for his return, team sources said he is poised to begin practising with the Raptors — the strongest indication yet that Ford will play again this season.
