Tiger has work left to do

From Saturday's Globe and Mail

Tiger Woods's name is scattered throughout the Masters record book. He set or tied 20 records in 1997 alone, when he romped to his first of four titles at Augusta National. His name pops up so often it's almost surprising when he isn't leading a significant category.

Perhaps it's just as interesting to note the records he doesn't own. Yet, anyway.

WINS

Woods has pulled on his size 42-tall green jacket four times, but he remains two titles behind his boyhood golf hero, Jack Nicklaus. Arnold Palmer has also won four times. Nicklaus doesn't expect his record to last. "Arnold and I both agreed," Nicklaus said in 1996, "that you could take his Masters and my Masters, and add them together, and this kid should win more than that."

LOW SCORE FOR ONE ROUND

Nick Price (1986) and Greg Norman (1996) share the lowest one-round score: nine-under-par 63. Woods's best for 18 holes at Augusta National during competition is 65, posted in 1997 and again in 2005.

MOST BIRDIES IN A SINGLE YEAR

Phil Mickelson, a birdie machine wherever he plays, has the Masters record with 25 ( 2001). But Woods is next in line with 24 (2005), tied with Jose Maria Olazabal (1991).

TOP-FIVE FINISHES

In addition to his six victories, Nicklaus had nine other top-five finishes. Woods is almost half way there with seven, quite respectable considering he has played just 11 times as a pro.

MOST STARTS

Three-time champion Gary Player, 72, will set the record for starts when he tees off next Thursday in his 51st Masters. Woods can be forgiven for lagging. He's just 32 and won't be able to make his 51st start until 2045.
